3 Things I have learned about Myself

SELF AWARENESS-NO SHAME ON MY GAME July 4, 2021

My most important task daily, is to increase my self awareness.

Isn't it interesting, that we try so hard to know and understand our spouse, siblings, children, friends, employees , with whom we spend so little time, yet we often do not know the one with whom we live all the time.

My goal is to know myself; the good, bad and the ugliness because it is only when I do, that I can truly appreciate my strengths and address my flaws.

Well, I have learned that:

  1. I have a tendency to believe the worsst about myself. My inner critic can be quite harsh and she has driven me to impulsive decisions and perfectionism.

What is your inner critic like? Is this inner voice nurturing, playful, flirtatios or encourages you to be so driven you often burn out. Deal with your inner critic and come to a healthy balance.

2. I tend to care for others more than I do myself.

I know this has served to drive me into the caring professions and also benifited me by being a nurturing spouse and parent. However, I have engaged in some soul searching and made some discoveries along the way. My family of origin was not the most supportive , well let's just say, I am from a broken home . I was raised by grandparents who were raising several second generations and so there were some missing elements in my upbringing, even though I gained several cousin-siblings , a strong sense of responsibility and the feeling that putting self first was SELFISH and UNGODLY.

These were thought that were engrained in my psychi and were operationalized from a very young age. It takes much effort and being intentional about making these changes, especially saying "NO" to others' agendas, to put myself first in most instances.

3. I am stubborn
Yes I am! I am learning that this trait has protected me from choosing the wrong path in life. I was told that I could never become a Nurse because I am "flat-footed" . I did it anyway and I am so thankful that I did.
While stubborness is a protector, It can also lead to being dismissive of the wisdom of others. At times, the still quiet voice within has had to break through on this trait. l am a work in PROGRESS...

What have you learned about yourself over the years and lately? Please let us know. You may be helping more than you know.
